First Course

It’s no great secret that Vancouver is a food-lovers'* paradise. Fueled by the readily available supply of fresh, locally produced ingredients from the interior and Island, combined with a culinary meltingpot of influences from the Old World, Asia and beyond, and with a supply of talent that’s second to none, there’s a lot of good reasons Vancouver has been named one of the world’s 10 best restaurant cities.

As befits a city with such a prominent culinary scene, there’s a plethora of top-notch foodbloggers and writers out there whose difficult job it is to stay abreast of all the openings, closings, hits and misses thereof.

This blog is not going to be among them.

We are not restaurant reviewers or critics. We have little inside knowledge of the restaurant game: the scoops, the gossip, the who’s who. We are not chefs, sommeliers, waiters or otherwise trained practitioners of the culinary arts (though we are passable enough as cooks in our own kitchens), so don’t expect ingredient-by-ingredient and morsel-by-morsel breakdowns iterating every nuance and flavour. I, for one, don’t even know what truffle oil tastes like and couldn’t pick a good foie gras out of a police lineup.

What we will provide are our own pure, honest and unpretentious takes on eating out in Vancouver. Our main focus will be on what is probably this city’s favourite meal: brunch, though expect frequent digressions from this theme as we explore other meals and other venues (even our own kitchens).

In an online market glutted with foodpundits both amateur and pro, what we want is for this blog to stand out as a testament to the simple appreciation of good meals and the whole visceral, sensual experience of dining out in our favourite Vancouver neighbourhoods.

Enjoy.
